background: child ho od cancer, as o n e of the life thre at ening and most serio u s health pro b lems, co n si d er a bly i n fl u en ce s the cogniti v e and soci a l functions of children with c ancer and the i r families; ho w e ver, sur p risin gl y e n ough, t h ese chil d ren are q u ite co mpatible w ith their pe ers and even fu n ction bet t er emotio n ally compa r ed with norm a l chil dre n. this mat t er s t ill r e mains t o b e a m y st e r y . methods: in this stu d y, t h e a bili t y of ig no r i ng negati v e st i muli as a t e c h nique of emot i o n r e gul a tion w a s in v e s t igated in ch i l d ren w ith cancer. f o r this pur p o se, 78 children (33 girls and 45 boys aged 3 to 12 ye a rs) with pediatric acu t e lymp h o bl a stic leuke m ia (all), and 89 h e alt h y children (52 girls and 37 b o ys a g ed 3 to 12 ye a rs) parti c ipated in this stu d y. at the f i rst sta ge , a num be r of po s iti v e , negati v e and neutr a l pictures were displ a yed to c h il d ren. at t h e second sta g e, they w e re as ke d to i d entify t h e pictures from among a collection. results: data analysis by manova in d icated that children with cancer, co mpared with healt h y childre n , co u ld re c o gni z e more posi t ive images than n e g a tive ones. furthermore, it was found t h at age, sex, du ration of h o spital stay, duration of disease and financial situa t ion had an effect on the differen c e between the two grou p s. conclusion: positi v e bias m e mory can expl a in low depression and lack of symp t o ms of p o st t raumatic s t r e ss d i s o rd e r in chil d ren with all. at t e nt i o n s hifting i s multifac t orial pheno m e n o n and neurologic factors and family sup p ort pl a y important role in this hap p eni n g .
